Maritime forces from Gulf of Guinea nations, Europe, North-/South America (overall more than 30 nations), as well as several regional and international organizations begin exercise „Obangame Express 2017“ ... main official ceremony in Accra (Ghana), more ceremonies in other regional countries ... 12-day exercise incl. 2-phase at-sea portion ... combined with earlier „Saharan Express“, sponsored by US Africa Command ...improve regional cooperation, maritime domain awareness, information-sharing practices, and tactical interdiction expertise to enhance the collective capabilities

NATO
In line with Montreux Treaty regulations, NATO SNMCMG-2 completes a 20-day deployment to the Black Sea (visits to / exercises with regional partner navies), passing the Bosphorus southbound for weekend visit to Istanbul (Turkey)

PHILIPPINES
An unidentified aircraft, possibly a drone, buzzed Philippine Navy patrol frigate „Ramon Alcaraz“ on maritime and sovereignty patrol on Benham Rise (in Philippine EEZ, east of Luzon)
(rmks: only recently, a Chinese survey ship had been spotted there, possibly on exploration work)

PIRACY
Horn of Africa: Somali pirates (originating from a village near Eyl, Puntland) hijack a Somali fishing vessel prob to use it as mother ship in attacks on larger ships off Somalia ... put 10 Yemeni crew and a Somali guard ashore but keep captain, engineer and cook on board

Black Sea Fleet NATYA class mine sweeper „Valentin Pikul“ passes the Turkish Straits headed for the Mediterranean
